The Comet Kids

Lucas, age 13, is awoken late one night by his father, who quickly drives the two of them to the local observatory where he works. There, the two of them are joined by Cliff, who works as an assistant to Lucas’ father. He has discovered a new Comet that will orbit the sun one year from today. Lucas is amazed at his Dad’s achievement

Jump forward to present day, a now 88-year-old Lucas lives in a nursing home, and waits impatiently for his daughter to drive him to the observatory to watch the Comet return to the night sky after 74 years. A nurse informs Lucas that she cannot reach his daughter after many failed phone calls. Not understanding how she could be late for such an important event, and knowing he doesn’t have much time, Lucas wheelchairs himself onto the street and heads alone to the observatory.

Returning to Lucas, now age 14, one year after his Dad’s discovery. Lucas and his friends are walking home from the drive-in when they see a bright flare blaze across the sky. It lands very close to their town. Could it be a piece that has broken off the passing Comet that Lucas’s father had discovered?

Unfortunately, Lucas’s father died soon after his discovery and never had the chance to see the Comet with his own eyes. Young Lucas, seeing the Comet in the night sky, feels compelled to search for the piece that has fallen to Earth. Little does Lucas know that two scientists, covering their identities in bio hazard suits, are also after the same piece of the Comet, and the race is on to claim it first.

Having almost reached the Comet, Lucas and his friends are confronted by the scientists and Lucas discovers that one them is Cliff, his Dad’s former assistant. Cliff wants to steal the fame for discovering the Comet but with the help of his friends, Lucas fights off the scientists and claims the Comet.

Returning to present day, 88-year-old Lucas watches the Comet overhead at the observatory. His daughter finally arrives worried that Lucas had left the nursing home without her. But as they sit at the base of the telescope and watch the Comet return to the night skies, Lucas and his daughter are both emotionally moved by their shared experience and Lucas is grateful to have seen the Comet twice in his life.
